La Unión Demócrata Independiente (UDI) nace el 24 de Septiembre de1983 fundada por Jaime Guzmán, Sergio Fernández, Javier Leturia, Guillermo Elton, Pablo Longueira y Luis Cordero por la inquietud de crear un nuevo partido político, que se fundará sobre un triple perfil: popular, de inspiración cristiana y que apoya el sistema social de mercado, donde sus miembros, tal como recalcara Jaime Guzmán “debían actuar como demócratas independientes y gremialistas”.
